Golfito is a small port town, which is capital of the county of Golfito located in Costa Rica's southern zone. The word Golfito means small port as it is a naturally protected port inside the Golfo Dulce. It was established as an economical center around 1936 when the Banana company moved their operations to the area. The Banana company established residential areas, schools, hospitals, social areas and even an airport which provided the infrastructure necesary for a developing town. This lasted only about 40 years; in 1984 the company moved to Panama due to less propduction which caused social unhappiness. After this the Costa Rican government established the Duty Free Zone in an effort to keep the economy and the town alive.
With the Duty Free Zone came the development of restaurants and cabins around this area. In the past 20 years foreigners visiting the area discovered such beauty and natural richness that many have developed Eco-Lodges or other businesses to exploit this. In the town of Golfito there is a true mix of culture as many employees from the Banana company stayed and built families with the locals. Also, many expats have found it a place of freedom and enjoyment.
Golfito is the doorway to the Golfo Dulce, one of the most biodiverse places on our planet. In the recent years many new species have been discovered and the Golfo Dulce has become world known. The national parks surrounding Golfito and the Golfo Dulce such as Corcovado NP, Piedras Blancas NP and Golfito Refuge have an enourmous amount of flora and fauna that can not be ignored. Due to this Costa Rica has invested in programs to preserve these areas. Many homes in Golfito are surrounded by forests full of wildlife.
